Natal Chart Guide: A Map of Your Birth Sky

A natal chart records where the Sun, Moon, planets, and selected points appeared from a particular place at a particular moment. It gives astrologers a shared map to interpret; the calculation and the interpretation are two different steps.

01 / 03

What a natal chart contains

A chart brings together planetary longitudes, zodiac signs, houses, angles, and aspects. A planet’s longitude is the calculated astronomical position. Its sign is the thirty-degree zodiac segment containing that position; an aspect describes the angular distance between two bodies.

The Sun, Moon, and Ascendant are often called the chart’s main three in popular astrology. They are only a starting point: Mercury, Venus, Mars, the outer planets, lunar nodes, and the relationships between placements add further context.

02 / 03

Why time and place matter

Earth’s rotation changes the local horizon and meridian throughout the day. Birth time and coordinates are therefore essential for calculating the Ascendant, Midheaven, and house cusps. The Moon also moves quickly, so its sign can depend on the time when it is near a sign boundary.

When the birth time is unknown, a responsible chart leaves houses and angles unassigned. A noon estimate can be useful for date-based planetary positions, but it must not be presented as a known Ascendant or house placement.

03 / 03

Calculation before interpretation

A chart engine calculates positions from a time standard, coordinates, zodiac system, and ephemeris. Tropical and sidereal settings produce different zodiac longitudes; the chosen system and house method should be shown with the result.

Astrological meanings are symbolic traditions, not scientific diagnoses or guarantees. Use interpretations as prompts for reflection and weigh them alongside your own experience and evidence.

Questions, plainly answered

A little more clarity.

Is a natal chart the same as a birth chart?

The terms are commonly used for the same chart: calculated planetary positions for a person’s birth time and place.

Can I make a chart without an exact birth time?

Yes. Date-based positions can still be calculated, but the Ascendant, Midheaven, and houses should remain unknown.
